Despite certain variances and exceptions, most mushrooms go through the same basic developmental stages. A mushroom typically ages and releases its spores; the spores germinate on a suitable growing medium; the spores colonize the environment in an endeavor to seize as much space as possible in order to build up a competitive biomass; and mushrooms fruit again when the expanding mycelium feels constrained.
When the mushrooms are fully grown, they release spores, which starts the cycle all over again. Many mushroom growers utilize spawn as their starter because it offers them a head start on the process and enables them to develop mycelium directly, which increases their chances of outcompeting spores that germinate in the wild.
Being aware of all the developmental stages will make you a more perceptive grower. You’ll learn to identify not just the particular requirements of each stage but also the particular requirements of every mushroom you cultivate so that you may create a special plan of action for each.
