The objective of feed formulation is to utilise the knowledge about nutrient availability in feed components and animal nutrition in the development of nutritionally adequate ration that would be consumed in sufficient quantity to provide optimum production at the least cost.

It is not just about what we give our livestock as feed, getting to know their nutritional requirements as well as the nutritional value of the feed components in the livestock feed, in this post you’ll learn how to determine the Metabolizable energy and Percentage crude protein in livestock feed. You can then tweak the components if you want to either increase the Metabolizable energy or percentage Crude Protein in the feed.

Assume that a chick diet contains:

  • Maize – 50kg
  • Soybean meal – 30kg
  • Wheat offal – 15kg
  • Palm oil – 2kg
  • Bonemeal
  • Oyster shell
  • Salt
  • Premix

Let’s Determine the metabolizable energy and crude protein.

With the calculation above you can calculate the energy content and protein content of any kind of feed all you need to do is to have a knowledge of the following:

  • The quantity of each ingredient component in the feed in order to convert it to percentage as seen in the example above.
  • The nutritional requirements of the animal based on the specie age and products expected from the animal; milk, egg, calcium, meat.
  • The nutrients in each feed component the Metabolizable energy, crude protein, calcium, phosphorus.

Taking notes of the points above you can determine the nutrients in your livestock feed adjust the nutrient by increasing or reducing the feed components but make sure the percentage sums up to 💯 for accurate results.
