WHAT YOU WILL NEED

📌Food Grain (preferably rye)
📌5 gallon pail or comparable container
📌Large pot and a stove.
📌Screen or strainer
📌Plastic fill and mason jars. (or artificial filter disc)
📌Sterilizer under pressure.

The following technique is an approach to get the best Grain Spawn it is also easy to make.

First, rinse and soak.

When measuring the desired amount of grain, keep in mind that rye will virtually double in size after being soaked. Use a quart jar and measure out 1 quart of dry grain for every 3 quarts of desired spawn so that your sterilized jars are 2/3 to 3/4 full. Add a bit extra just to be safe.

The grains will probably contain a variety of undesirables, including dust, wood chips, dead insects, and other debris. Rinse the grain in cold water four or five times, or until the water is reasonably clear when it drains.

After that, pour water over the grains in a large basin or bucket. You could also add some coffee and gypsum.

The gypsum aids in keeping the grains from adhering to one another, while the coffee slightly alters the pH and is thought to boost production. Use around a tablespoon of gypsum and a cup of coffee for 10 jars.

Give the grains 12 to 24 hours to soak.

This will make it possible for the grains to absorb water, causing many pollutants to sprout and increasing their susceptibility to sterilizing.

COOK in Step 2
The grains will continue to swell and absorb water as a result of cooking. Additionally, they become significantly softer, making them simpler for the mycelium to digest.

In a big pot, you can bring the grains to a boil and then simmer them for ten to fifteen minutes.

Overcooking them increases the possibility of contamination during incubation because it can break open many of the individual grains.

Third step: RAIN AND DRY
The grains are also cooked so that they can dry by steaming off.

Pour the hot, boiling grains into a colander and shake it vigorously to release the steam. Then, over a screen or towel, spread the grains out into a thin layer. Give the grains an hour or two to dry. They should be completely dry on the outside when they are finished.

Grab a few grains to test out. They ought to be loose, individual kernels that are moist on the inside and dry on the outside.

LOAD AND STERILIZE IN STEP 4
Now that your grains are dry, fill your jars with them until they are about 2/3 to 3/4 full.

To permit gas exchange while the cells are being incubated, the jar lids ought to have a permeable filter. There are several ways to accomplish this. I merely punch a 1/4-inch hole in the lid and insert a wad of synthetic pillow filling.

Contaminants will be effectively stopped while still being able to breathe through the mycelium. Another benefit of this approach is that jars can be directly injected with inoculum using a culture syringe through the pillow filling.

A synthetic filter disc can be inserted between the jar lid and the screw cap after a few holes are drilled in the lid as an alternative.

A synthetic filter disc can be inserted between the jar lid and the screw cap after a few holes are drilled in the lid as an alternative.

These discs, which are made to fit wide mouth or standard-sized mason jars, are offered by various online retailers. I also like to put the lid on the jar upside down, with the rubber seal facing up and the metal side against the glass.

This makes it simpler to open the lid without having to pry it off with your fingers when doing so in a sanitary environment.

Covering the lids of your jars with tinfoil is the last step in the preparation process. By doing this, you can stop water from the pressure cooker from leaking into your grain and altering the jar’s moisture level.
